General purpose mixes

EcoMax™

EcoMax™ concrete is a new addition to Westbay’s suite of low carbon concrete offering. EcoMax™ utilises low carbon Eco-Cem from HR Cement to produce concrete for a range of applications, carbon reductions of up to 70% reduction over standard concrete can be achieved. Actual carbon reductions are determined on a mix by mix basis, and can be customised to suit your environmental goals and concrete application.

Standard structural

Our every day structural concrete is designed and audited according to NZS3104 and other industry standards referenced in the NZ Building Code. Our standard mixes are robust in all applications, maximise ease of use and economy.

Pump mixes

Concrete is relatively heavy and often used in large quantities, transporting from delivery truck to pour location often requires a specialist concrete boom pump. Concrete pumps range from small trailer mounted units for Blockfill and Shotcrete to very large hydraulic boom units reaching over 40 metres across building site. We have a range of standard pump mixes which comply with NZ standards while having a lower viscosity and stiffness to aid pumpability. We have mixes setup which can be pumped through 2” to 5” pump lines and over 100 metres of static pump line.

Blockfill mixes

Concrete masonry blocks are often used for foundations, structural walls, pools and industrial applications. The key part of the completed masonry wall is the high flow concrete mix used to flow into all cavities and around reinforcing bars. We have a large range of mixes from 17.5 to 40 MPa using 7 mm and 10 mm aggregates. These mixes can be pumped into place, or poured from truck chute or wheel barrow. Special additives can be included to assist with concrete density and water proofing plus expansion to offset initial slumping within the masonry unit.

Shotcrete

Shotcrete, spraycrete, gunite are all names for a special type of concrete which is applied to any substrate and orientation. Pumping, spraying and application is very specilised and mostly used for pools, skate parks, bank retaining and underground mining. We tailor mixes to suit the application and engineering requirements, contact us for trade contacts and mix information.

Concrete raft floor mixes

Plastic and polystyrene pods, reinforcing and concrete are combined to form raft or pod floors for housing and light commercial applications. Westbay has a range of mixes and design options to cover all ground conditions from ‘Good Ground’ to expansive clays and liquefiable. Raft mixes are typically 20 or 25 MPa, have a higher workability to flow around pods and reinforcing. Applications in liquefiable areas often require special concrete which include steel fibres to assist with movement stresses. Westbay has partnered with Shearcrete™ to offer fibre reinforced concrete suitable for both TC2 and TC3 applications where compliance to NZS3101 (NZ standard for reinforced concrete design) is required.

Layers mix

This is our locally loved tradie friendly mix which is designed help concrete contractors lay large areas of concrete at once, while providing ease of pouring and compaction and industry leading finishability. This is the base mix for most residential and landscaping applications where pigments can be added or decorative products can be broadcast or peppered on surface.

Fibres for reinforcement and concrete protection

Westbay stocks a wide range of fibre options to assist concrete in many applications. Main areas of fibre application in concrete include:

  • Structural application to NZ Standards. Applications include floors, yard hard stands, foundations and shotcrete. Fibres are high tensile steel and come in a variety of lengths and shapes to provide additional flexural and shear strength. Proprietary fibre brand supplied include iNFORCE, Dramix® and Shearcrete™.

  • Decorative and landscaping applications are typically limited to soft and fine micro fibres up to 12 mm long. This type of fibre provides concrete with increased resistance to plastic cracking in the early stages of concrete setting where is exposed to early drying from wind, heat sun etc.

  • Yard concrete and hard stands. Rigid plastic fibres up to 50 mm long are an option for slabs on grade where minimal reinforcement is required and aesthetics rule out steel fibres. These fibres are also useful for placing concrete on steep slopes to provide early cohesion.

Decorative concrete

Exposed pebble

An exposed concrete finish typically includes rounded alluvial aggregates and fine sand which leaves dense decorative surface once finishing processes are completed. Pebble options range in colour, size and shape. Our most popular finish uses Hawkes Bay round greywacke pebble up to 16 mm diameter. Other more colourful options from Waikato, Taranaki and lower North Island are available on request. Additional of small shell particles to these mixes is a popular option to provide a white fleck to the surface or a lighter ‘beachy’ feel when added in larger quantities.

Coloured concrete

All of our standard and decorative can have colouring pigment added to provide a long-term tint to the finish. The range of colour options is nearly endless. Half and full dose black oxide tint is the most economic and popular choice to reduce glare and tyre marks on driveways.

We typically use pigments from:

Premium finishes

Polished, deep grind and bush-hammered surfaces are now very popular. These premium finishes are very specialised and often require tailored concrete mixes to provide the premium finish required.

Roughcast architectural finish

Insitu poured walls, columns and floor soffits have become popular in recent years. These finishes are extremely specialised, providing outstanding results when experienced carpenters and tradesmen use one of our high flow rough cast structural or decorative mixes. These mixes can be poured in lifts up to 3 metres high, require limited compaction and are cohesive in consistency.

Special purpose concrete

High strength

Westbay often provides very specialised concrete to precast and industrial customers requiring over 60 MPa crushing strength at 28 days of age (standard house floor concrete is 20 MPa). Concrete’s over 100 MPa strength have been manufactured and supplied in the recent past, so the sky is the limit!

Self Compacting concrete (SCC)

Commercial and architectural applications can sometime limit the ability to adequately compact concrete and provide a dense durable finish. SCC is a relatively new type of concrete which uses complex pozzolans, polymers and aggregates to provide concrete which is extremely flowable while resisting aggregate segregation. SCC mixes are typically very high strength, resulting in dense durable finishes.

Marine concrete

Concrete used in coastal structural applications are subject to severe chemical attack from salt water and sea spray. Our marine concrete mixes comply to NZS3101 durability requirements and contain special pozzolans and admixtures to reduce concrete permeability and protect reinforcement.
